What is Pocket dialing?
Thousands of pocket-dialed calls are tying up emergency phone lines causing a threat to public safety. These calls occur when a button preprogrammed with 911 is unintentionally hit while the phone is in a pocket or purse. The 911 operator must waste precious time trying to determine if there is an actual emergency.
What you should do
To prevent “pocket dialing” cell phone users should turn off the 911 auto-dial feature and/or lock their cell phone keypad before storing them.
If you accidentally call 911
Please do not hang up, it is very important to stay on the line and let the operator know what has happened. Every call to 911 is taken seriously, when someone doesn’t respond or hangs up the operator knows it could be an indication that there is a true emergency that cannot be ignored.
